20/20 Update – Accomplishments, Next Steps, and Important Dates

Dear ACA Members,

The external value for what ACA has accomplished in the last five years in terms of our research and most recently through the work of the 20/20 Task Force is unparalleled. I just returned from a trip to Washington, D.C., and the reception and open dialogue with other organizations was extraordinary — and for the first time, ACA has a real understanding of how our body of work is valued and appreciated externally. This goes a long way toward setting the climate for positive outcomes when we enter into discussions about education reform and other critical child and youth development issues. This is imperative to the success of the 20/20 Vision and to ACA’s future as a leader in child and youth development.

The 20/20 Task Force has made impressive developments and progress toward ACA’s 20/20 Vision. I wanted to take a moment and recognize those accomplishments, address the next steps in the process, and clear up any confusion that may have resulted from the flurry of e-mails, meetings, and conference calls that have taken place over the past month.

First, let’s celebrate the accomplishments to date. The 20/20 Task Force was asked to discover and analyze ACA’s external perception — how the Association is viewed by other organizations and groups, and what value those organizations saw in ACA. The Task Force was also asked to examine internal operational strengths and weaknesses in order to better understand our competitive opportunities and challenges. The Task Force has done an amazing job — diligently completing their work ahead of the anticipated sunset date in February 2010. Please join me in expressing our sincerest thanks to these volunteers for their time, tenacity, and talents.

In discussing the next phase — one of input, internal influence, and alignment — the Task Force recognizes that it is critical that the Association secures expert advice in the area of organizational development. It is on their recommendation that ACA will be working with an organizational development expert — allowing all of us to fully engage and participate in the task ahead. The consultant will begin to work with us soon after the Thanksgiving holiday. In the meantime, the work groups and meetings around the 20/20 Vision that are scheduled throughout the coming weeks will continue as planned — this has not changed.

There are many pieces and parts to the 20/20 Vision, and the next phase is just that — the next phase. This is a forward progression of what was started by the Task Force so many months ago.

Lastly, I wanted to clarify the schedule for the Leadership Summit and the Council of Delegates:

  • BOTH the Leadership Summit and the Council of Delegates will be meeting during ACA’s National Conference in Denver, Colorado, in February.
  • The Leadership Summit will begin on Monday, February 15, at 2 p.m. and will continue until 11:15 a.m. on the following day.
  • Immediately following the Leadership Summit, the Council of Delegates will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16. The agenda for this meeting focuses on Association business and a brief report on the Leadership Summit.

Moving forward, our opportunities far outweigh our challenges, and the Association’s vision for a credible, visible, and viable organization is real. As an Association facing a centennial milestone, we know that growth and evolution are critical. We need to recognize the end result — that we stay relevant, present, and able to provide positive, healthy camp experiences to the next 100 years of children, youth, and adults.

Sincerely,

Peg Smith
CEO, American Camp Association
